S&P : fierce competition fuels effect of slow growth on GCC insurance market

Posted on November 21st, 2011

A report from Standard & Poor’s shows insurance markets in the six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region are deepening.

While markets are still growing, to participants used to double-digit growth, current business development probably seems positively sluggish as the global economic slowdown takes effect in the region. Regulatory supervision brings more change, some of it extensive.

In the regions maturing markets, larger companies are building markets at the expense of smaller competitors. Mid-size firms are falling away, leaving a split in the region between large and small insurance companies. The abundance of small players with insufficient underwriting expertise continues to cause more risk-aware companies difficulty; the resulting fierce competition is unsustainable, in our view.

Islanders get a raw deal

People living in the outer reaches of the UK may at long last be getting a 5p per litre cut in fuel prices. Motorists on the outer boundaries of Britain have for a long time got a poor deal compared to the rest of us. Detroit News apologizes for censoring auto critic”s review

Posted on November 13th, 2011

News articles generally go through a rigorous editing process before being published. However, edits recently made to an auto critic’s article in The Detroit News ultimately led to controversy, according to the Wall Street Journal. Displeased with the censorship, the critic quit his position, leading the paper to publish a front-page apology.

The “scathing” review

The root of the conflict between auto columnist Scott Burgess and editor and publisher Jon Wolman was a review Burgess wrote about the Chrysler 200. The review was published in the print edition of the paper. According to the source, the “scathing” review was so harsh, it drew the ire of an advertiser.

In order to appease that advertiser, the source says Wolman made substantial changes to the article, softening it significantly before publishing the online version.
